In my line of work it is important to be innovative and forward looking. Thinking beautifully yet considering all the necessary elements that need to fulfill the areas that need to be addressed. A successful design must have three elements:

FUNCTIONALITY

It needs to be functional from beginning, middle and end.

SMART LIFECYCLE

There needs to be conscious decisions on how it is assembled together, what is it made out of and what its end lifecycle will be.

EMOTIONAL CONNECTION

Lastly, there needs to be an emotional connection. There needs to be moments that give the users a chance to appreciate its presence, craftsmanship and beauty.

Design from the Heart

This was a freelance project I did in conjunction with Mahany Welding in Rochester, NY. I was commissioned to design a skateboard-themed bench as a memorial piece for Akeer Matthews.

Akeer was a student at the East Irondequoit Middle School who loved to skateboard. He was tragically killed in October of 2010. It was important for me to capture his personality in the piece and to create a place where everyone can go to and remember him.

Beyond Usability

While studying in Dessau, Germany. The city council approached the Industrial Design department to use design as a tool to reinvent the way citizens see their main city square. Zerbster Strasse is a center point of the city home to many businesses and pedestrian traffic. My goal was to use the surplus of bicycles as an area to address and create a functional yet memorable furniture piece. It can be used as a place to park a bike, look great in front of businesses, and establish an eclectic taste that past Bauhaus furniture pieces once emulated.

I create designs for mass-produced as well as handcrafted furniture products. My goal is to create concepts and designs that balance innovative design, functional requirements and aesthetic appeal always taking into consideration the following: design trends, competitive prices and the needs for manufacturers and other clients.
